Ten Tips to Help Dry Skin

Dry skin, also known medically as “xerosis,” is one of the most common medical conditions. It can also be caused by many factors, including environmental triggers that dry out the skin. Dry weather, harsh soaps and hot showers can all lead to skin moisture loss. Dry skin may also indicate a more serious condition called “hypothyroidism” or a result of an underactive thyroid. We will be discussing some of these tips in this article.

Dry Skin

Dry skin can be caused by many things. The following are some of the causes:

  • Dry skin can happen at any age, no matter how old or young. Dry skin is more common in those over 50. The reason is that the glands that produce oil in the skin shrink as we age, and the production of oil for our skin also decreases. Dry skin can also be caused by medical conditions like diabetes or kidney disease.
  • Atopic Dermatitis is a common form of eczema. This skin condition causes dry and itchy skin. Dry skin can manifest as a rash on the hands, elbows, and face. Atopic dermatitis can also be caused by an allergic reaction to certain triggers, such as perfume, sand or detergent. A great way to care for your skin is to keep it moisturized.

Tips for Dry Skin

Dry skin can be treated with a variety of home remedies. Here are some of the best home remedies for dry skin:

  • According to a 2013 study, sunflower seed helps improve skin hydration. Some oils may not be suitable for moisturizing skin. The same study found that olive oil can damage the skin’s barrier.
  • Coconut oil: Coconut oil is also good for skin hydration. One 2014 study found that coconut oil was as effective at moisturizing dry skin as petroleum jelly. Coconut oils can also increase the amount of fats on the skin’s surfaces.
  • Oatmeal bath: Oatmeal can be used to treat dry skin. Oatmeal extracts have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and moisturizing properties according to a 2015 study.
  • Drinking milk: Milk helps moisturize dry skin. According to a 2015 study, milk can help improve the condition of dry skin.
  • Glycerin can be used to moisturize your skin. It is a colorless liquid that bonds well with water and helps prevent dry skin. Glycerin can keep your skin moisturized longer and help to improve your skin barrier. Glycerin can be found in many skin care products.
  • Honey: A 2012 study found that honey is effective in treating many skin conditions. Honey is known to moisturize the skin and help heal it. You can apply honey directly to the skin.
  • Petroleum jelly: Also known as mineral oil or petroleum jelly, petroleum jelly has been a reliable and trusted source of skin-care properties for many years. A 2017 study by researchers found that petroleum jelly could improve the skin barrier of older people.
  • Aloe Vera Gel: Aloe vera gel has been shown to provide relief for dry skin in a 2003 study. Aloe Vera gel is best applied before you go to bed. The gel can be left on for the entire night and covered with a glove or sock. The gel can also be applied to other areas of the body to get the same results.
  • Tea bags can be used to reduce inflammation. The Cincinnati Health Institute noted that tea bags have a greater value than brewing tea. According to the institute green and black tea bags have cooling and anti-inflammatory effects on your skin. Black tea bags can also balance skin’s pH.
  • Avoid potential skin irritations: Sitting next to a fireplace or drinking water that has been chemically treated can cause skin to feel dry.
