Why do women outlive men?

Why do women outlive men?

People live longer today than they did a decade ago. This increase in life expectancy can be attributed to technological advances, societal developments and improvements in the healthcare sector. Despite these factors, there is still a wide variation in life expectancy between people.

In almost all societies, women live longer than men when it comes to gender. The more developed countries see life expectancy for males pegged at 72 years for males, as against 79 years for females, and less developed countries record less, 66 years for females, and 63 for males.

One question is begging for an answer: Why do women live longer than men?

Why do women live longer than men?

Research has shown that women are healthier than men in terms of telomeric health.

The telomeres are the protective endcaps of DNA strands that protect the chromosomes and are longer in females than they are in males. Experts and researchers agree that telomeres contribute to a longer, healthier life. The DNA becomes damaged when the telomeres are worn away. This leads to a decrease in life expectancy.

In her keynote speech at the North American Menopause Society, Elissa Elpel, Ph.D. noted that studies have suggested that telomerase activity has increased due to exposure to estrogen. Estrogen (the female sex hormone) helps the body get rid of bad cholesterol. This protects the body from cardiovascular diseases and other cholesterol-related illnesses.

You should also be aware that estrogen doesn’t always protect telomeres against damage. Telomeres can lose length due to chronic stress or other adversities. The telomeres may also be affected by ageing and additional stress.

Dr. JoAnn V. Pinkerton is the executive director at NAMS. She noted that the telomeres may not be able protect the chromosomes properly as they age. This could lead to cells malfunctioning due to lack of proper replenishment. This can lead to complications, such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Improving Your Telomeric Health

Your DNA damage does not need to be irreversible. Your DNA strands can be protected by the telomerase. Actively seeking out better health is the best way to increase your telomeres. You should eat well, exercise often, and get at least seven hours sleep each night.
