A survey of more than 1,351 Americans revealed that over half believe there are medical conspiracies. These are theories that exist online and in person, but have no basis in fact. We will discuss common myths surrounding getting fit and healthy and explain why they persist.
Why Do We Believe in Myths?
Zackary Berger MD, an assistant professor at John Hopkins School of Medicine believes that myths have as much power over people’s lives as the truth. This is due to the fact that these myths are consistent with certain prejudices and opinions we already have about a topic. He said that in addition to being constantly bombarded with inaccurate information, we tend to only pick those that are consistent with our beliefs.
James Garrow, a social media expert and public health specialist who works for the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, says that the internet is one of the main reasons this information gap exists. These beliefs have been so deeply ingrained in many people’s minds that they can be spread, he stated.
